Formed in 1985, the Sweet Grass Hills Protection Association was organized by Arlo and Darlene Skari of Liberty County in north central Montana on the Tootsie Creek drainage. Their water supply for both personal and agricultural needs would be one of the first to feel the direct effects of cyanide heap leach mining proposed by E.K. Lehmann and Associates.
The organization is made up of local citizens and Native American Tribes. The goal of the Sweet Grass Hills Protection Association is to protect and preserve the historical, cultural, religious, agricultural, hunting and recreational uses of the Hills while protecting the wildlife and plant habitates.
Due to the public input the Bureau of Land Management has revised the Sweet Grass Hills Amendment and Environmental Impact Statement to include withdrawing 19,765 acres of public land from hard rock mineral exploration for the next twenty years. However this 20 year moratorium does not impact valid existing mineral rights, including those claims on public land held by E.K. Lehmann of St. Paul, Minn.
