Tree City USA is a nationwide program developed by the National Arbor Day Foundation, in cooperation with the US Forest Service and the National Association of State Foresters. It is designed to recognize those communities that effectively manage their public tree resources. It also encourages the communities to begin tree management. It is an ongoing community improvement program based on four standards set by Tree city USA.

Tree City USA Standards

1. A Tree Board or Department to develop and manage a community tree management program with help from a professional forester.

2. A Community Tree Ordinance that requires the Board to draw up a work plan including care policies for planting, maintenance, and removal of trees.

3. A Community Forestry Program with a annual budget of at least $2 per capita should be established. This includes taking an inventory of trees on public property; summarizing data in a written report; an annual work plan including planting, watering, and fertilizing; dead and hazardous tree removal; pruning; and insect and disease control.

4. An Arbor Day Observance and Proclamation which can be one day or week long and should be accompanied by a proclamation by the mayor.

Each year Tree City USA gives achievement awards to those organizations who meet the standards. TURF has recieved this award for seven years in a row. Congratulations!
